Description
I like Avatar. It might be a guilty pleasure of mine, but I still enjoy watching all the dazzling effects.
However, I fully admit that its story is pretty shallow and the characters are fairly disinteresting.
I mind that it's a white guilt movie. Even though race issues commonly pop up in sci-fi. There's practically a billion 'x alien is y race' episodes in Star Trek. And where Na'vi are Native Americans, Prawns in District 9 are apartheid blacks.
I mind that the corporation and military are myopic stereotypes. Even though they certainly are in every sci-fi Michael Crichton has ever written, including Jurassic Park. Though admittedly Avatar went pretty extreme with the 'mustache-twisting-evil'.
I mind that the Na'vi are whole and good and humans are bad. Even though superficial, no gray area segregation in groups is also common to sci-fi. Like there are no good Sith, but all Jedi are good (unless they join sith, or visa versa).
On the subject of Star Wars, I mind that Avatar is a Last of the Mahicans/Dances with Wolves (which also was inspired by Pocahontas, the real historical event, not the Disney version. Same with Ferngully.) Just like I mind that Star Wars is essentially Frank Herbert's Dune with more lasers.
However, I can set all of that aside and appreciate the milestone visuals and designs most of the movies I mentioned provided to cinematography. Especially as an artist. Still, I really do wish that the script was everything the visuals were.
This was all made by me. The background to the stamp is made-to-size (crappy) pixel art. Hope you all enjoy.
Edit: Fixed a transparency issue.
