Napalm for Law-Abiding Citizens

I won't lie, this is as a direct result of the new hub-bub over gun regulation.

Let me first state that I'm not anti-gun or anti-gun ownership. I had a firearm in the house for the most of my childhood (we lived on a livestock farm and it was used to put down sick or injured animals). It's a tool that has completely appropriate uses.

I also think that there are other things we need to be doing in order to reduce the number of fatal shootings in our country, like remove suspects' name from headlines and stop making them house-hold celebrities.

This is a complicated issue and there is no perfect solution, certainly not one where one action is going to make it all better.

With that said:

I am pro-gun regulation. And I don't think people have the 'right' any type of firearm they want just because they want it and they really promise that they'll be responsible with it.
To pinch from Picard's speech, how much potential lethality does something have to have before it becomes wrong to own?
Because by some of these people's arguments, the government has it, so civilians should too. Criminals can get it, since they don't care about laws banning it _{(even though the ban has made it extremely rare on the black market and thus severely limited criminal access to it, but you know, making it illegal only makes black market bigger! )} so doesn't mean citizens should have it to 'protect their families?'

No. If you need weapons designed for killing dozens of assailants in order to protect your family, you're doing something very wrong.
