Abortion

Description

This is an incredibly sensitive hot-button political issue that near everyone under the sun has an opinion on. Mine is one of the millions of voices in the void, but I'll give it anyway.

I don't care if the zygote, embryo or fetus is alive, human, conscious or sentient. I don't care if you call it a baby or parasite or if your faith or personal creed does not permit abortion. I don't care whether the person uses birth control or not, nor if she's had abortions before.

As others have said, pregnancy is not a punishment. You cannot, will not force anybody into any sort of compromising medical condition even if it saves a life. Even if at some point the person consented to the procedure. With any other surgery, consent can be revoked at any time. Childbirth is not, nor should it, be any different.

By making this assertion you are in affect removing personal responsibility and therfore personal agency. That is to say that you are suggesting that it was not something that occured through personal action and their was nothing they could do to prevet the situation. Also the statment, "My issue is that thousands of women still die every year due to pregnancy and childbirth. Thousands more have debilitating injuries which can effect their health and well being for the rest of their lives." is inaccurate. only about 1.5 percent of women die from child birthing or related complications. In fact complications for the would be mother, for the child or the concieving of the child through rape or incest make up in total less than 1% of abortions. The most cited reasons were either not ready to have a child or for financial reasons. I am pro-choice, a woman can choose whether or not she has sex, whether or not the man is wearing a condom, her using a female condome, the use of an inter-uterine device, spermacidal jellies, diaghram, the pill(so common a birth control I can use a general term to descirbe it without confusion), the patch, theirs even implantable birth control, tubes tied, visectomies, the morning after pill(also the morning after next pill). To suggest that a woman has no options but abortion is not only wrong from a scientific and logical stand point, its also irresponsible. Blaming a fetus for impregnating a woman is like blaming a beer for a man being an alchoholic. Both situations require you to remove personal agency i.e. will, placing them in a position of complete helplessness when in fact they were the one who made the choice. All choices have consequences and to suggest that a woman should be treated as incapabl of understanding this, and by extention taking responsibilty for those consequences, is to reduce said woman to the status both intellectually and in capacity of will, to that of a child. This would be considered by most to be very misogynistic and degrading to women.
